Varnishing Your Acrylic Painting

When I paint, I use high quality acrylics, but varnishing your acrylic painting is an optional step that adds extra protection from dust and sunlight while also enhancing its finish. In this blog you can see the various varnish options, and get more information on varnishing yourself vs purchasing the add-on for me to do it. There will also be tips on how to clean and care for your painting!

Varnish options

Matte: A non-reflective finish that slightly mutes color and reduces glare. It gives the painting a soft, natural look and is nearly invisible once applied.

Satin: A balanced finish between matte and gloss, offering a slight sheen without being too shiny. It enhances colors subtly while still reducing glare.

Gloss: A shiny, reflective finish that makes colors appear more vibrant and deep. It enhances contrast and gives the painting a polished, professional look.

Getting the varnish & shipping add-on

When you get the Varnish & Shipping add-on, you’re getting the convenience of knowing your painting is getting varnished by a professional! I have varnished many paintings and will ensure it’s done properly and gets the correct number of coats. I will also ship it to you (included in the price) so you can get it delivered straight to your house!

Varnishing your painting yourself

If you’re interested in varnishing your painting yourself, there are a few important things to keep in mind:

Getting the right varnish: To ensure you get the right varnish, visit your local art store and ask an expert about which art varnish you should get. Getting the proper varnish will prevent your painting from yellowing over time. Whatever you do, DO NOT go to a hardware store and get floor varnish - it will ruin your painting!

Applying the varnish correctly: Follow the steps in the blog linked below, so you know you will varnish your painting correctly! How to Varnish an Acrylic Painting

Leaving it out to dry: Once you’ve applied the varnish, make sure it’s in a safe place (away from children, pets, or anything that may disturb it) so it can dry.

Cleaning your Varnished Acrylic painting

Even though varnish will protect your painting from dust, but if you choose to clean your painting, keep this in mind:

  • Use a damp cloth with just water or a soft cloth

  • DO NOT spray anything on the painting

  • DO NOT use any cleaning products on the painting
